I have four of these guards bought from another supplier a few years ago and needed a couple of additional ones so was pleased to see that GWD had them in stock at a reasonable price. I haven’t found any other makes yet which offer such ready adjustment of the mesh size and accommodate a range of different makes of feeder. They clean up easily when that’s needed and offer some protection of the feeders in a downpour. The bottom tray of the guard helps catch some of usual ‘fall out’ from the feeder and has sufficient drain holes so that water doesn’t gather.
The one issue I’ve encountered with all the original guards is the durability of the hinges. They are difficult to lubricate and in my opinion are not substantial enough to support the weight of the opening half of the cage. My experience is that the hinges seize and break or just give way and so you end up with the guard in two halves. However, because the rest of the guard is substantial and otherwise quite well made, it’s been possible to keep them all in service by fitting alternative ‘hinges’ from items at hand like zip ties, small split rings, or a twist of insulated single core cable and all still hold together well.
I expect I’ll probably encounter similar problems with the hinges on the new ones in due course, but the upside is that despite this I know I will still have serviceable adjustable feeder guards for some years to come.
